Downers Grove South's football season is over after a 42-14 home loss to York in the IHSA Class 8A first-round playoff on Friday, Oct. 30.

The Mustangs, who won the West Suburban Gold conference title with an unbeaten conference record, were without starting quarterback James Sobkowiak. Sobkowiak recently committed to Arizona State for baseball, according to Shaw Local's Friday Night Drive.

York took control early. Running back Chris Georgas scored all four of his touchdowns in the first half, finishing with 115 yards on 14 carries and three receptions for 51 yards. His scores came on three rushing touchdowns and a 38-yard pass from quarterback Zack Assaad.

York's defense smothered DGS, holding the Mustangs to 37 yards of total offense in the opening half. Matt Young recovered a fumble and Joey Sica grabbed an interception.

Assaad completed 13 of 18 passes for 217 yards, with Colton Heilig hauling in five catches for 86 yards as his top target. A 60-yard touchdown strike to Jake Tinch early in the third quarter triggered the running clock. Will Bute added a 49-yard touchdown run out of the Wildcat formation in his return from injury.

DGS (7-3) got on the scoreboard on the last play of the third quarter when backup quarterback Vincent Junkas connected with Forest Bates on a 67-yard touchdown pass. Junkas later found Nate Thurston for a 27-yard score.

Molinari reflects on the season

DGS coach Mark Molinari acknowledged the Mustangs ran into a tough opponent on a difficult night.

"We are a good football team," Molinari said, "but didn't have our best night against a really good team …"

He said the team accomplished key goals, including hosting a playoff game and winning the conference. Molinari credited a senior class that played hard and led during the offseason.

The Mustangs finish 7-3 after claiming the West Suburban Gold title during the regular season. York (8-3), winners of five straight, advances to face Loyola in the second round, a matchup Shaw Local reported will be the fourth meeting between the two programs in the last five years.
