Woodridge families can get their children's car seats checked for free Saturday, Sept. 26, at Cypress Cove, 8301 Janes Ave.
The Woodridge Police Department, state Sen. John Curran and the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) are co-hosting the inspection event from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Parents and caregivers can have their car seats inspected to confirm they are properly installed and sized for each child.
The event is free.
The Woodridge Police Department announced the event on its official social media accounts Sept. 18. The Village of Woodridge confirmed the details on its Facebook page.
Curran represents Illinois Senate District 41 and is based in Downers Grove. He is partnering with the police department and IDOT on the event.
Why it matters
The Sept. 26 event falls during Child Passenger Safety Week, a statewide observance running Sept. 21–27. IDOT uses the week to promote free car seat checks across Illinois, according to the agency's child passenger safety page.
Illinois has more than 1,600 certified child passenger safety technicians statewide, IDOT says. Those technicians provide training and hands-on help to parents and caregivers on proper car seat and booster seat use.
What the law requires
Under the Illinois Child Passenger Protection Act, all children under age 8 must ride in an appropriate child safety restraint system, according to the Illinois Secretary of State's office.
Children under age 2 must be secured in a rear-facing car seat unless they weigh more than 40 pounds or are taller than 40 inches.
