Downers Grove area residents who need help paying energy bills can apply for a county assistance program that covers natural gas, propane, electric and furnace costs.
The DuPage County Community Services Department announced Nov. 3 that funds are available through the Energy Assistance Program, formally known as the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP). The Village of Westmont posted the announcement on its website. Downers Grove Township is one of the local application sites.
Applications opened Oct. 1.
The program is scheduling appointments for seniors, persons with disabilities, families with children under five and households that have received a disconnection notice or already lost service. All other income-eligible households can also apply, according to the county's LIHEAP page. An overdue bill or disconnect notice is not required.
Who qualifies
Eligibility is based on household size and the combined gross income for the 30 days before the application date. Income must be at or below 300% of the Federal Poverty Level, regardless of citizenship status. For a single person, the monthly cap is $3,990. A household of four qualifies at $8,250 or less per month.
Households that qualify for LIHEAP also receive an automatic monthly discount on gas or electric bills through the county's Low-Income Discount Rate Program. The discount amount depends on income.
How to apply
Downers Grove Township accepts appointments at 630-719-6610. Residents can also call DuPage County Community Services directly at 630-407-6500 or 800-942-9412 to ask questions or schedule an in-person appointment. First-time applicants are encouraged to call before booking to confirm eligibility.
Online scheduling is available through the county's website. Households whose gas or electric service has already been disconnected can walk in at 421 N. County Farm Rd. in Wheaton, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The program also provides furnace assistance for homeowners whose heating system is broken or has been determined unsafe to operate.
