Downers Grove police are investigating a string of Halloween decoration vandalism incidents that left one resident with $1,450 in damage, according to police reports first reported by Patch.
Surveillance footage from the 6600 block of Stonewall Avenue showed eight or nine children on e-bikes approaching a home and striking a Halloween decoration before fleeing. A neighbor told police they saw six to eight kids on electric bikes near the targeted residence and said the group appeared to head toward Bolson Drive.
The Stonewall Avenue incident took place on Oct. 23. A resident there reported someone broke the head off a headless horseman decoration, snapped a grim reaper in half and broke two dog decorations.
That same evening, around 8 p.m., a resident in the 1600 block of Bolson Drive reported three inflatable Halloween decorations damaged at their home.
Two more reports followed on Oct. 25. Police said inflatable decorations were slashed outside a home in the 600 block of Lincoln Street. According to a police report, the Lincoln Street resident believes the damage was caused by "a group of kids on electric bikes that have been causing trouble in the neighborhood by drinking, ding dong ditching and destroying property."
A resident in the 4600 block of Roslyn Road also told police they came home on Oct. 25 to find their Halloween decorations damaged.
No suspects have been publicly identified in any of the incidents.
E-bikes a growing concern
The vandalism reports come as the Village of Downers Grove continues to work through how to regulate micromobility devices. At a July 1, 2025, Village Council meeting, Police Chief Devries presented on device classifications and enforcement. Mayor Barnett said residents have safety concerns and called the discussion "the start of the process to set the rules" for the devices, according to meeting minutes.
At that meeting, resident Paul Kimpton told the council that kids under 18 ride high-energy devices, both gas and electric, racing down streets and around McCollum Park. "There is no enforcement and there needs to be," he said.
