Firefighters from multiple departments worked for hours Monday afternoon to reach two workers trapped in a sewer beneath downtown Downers Grove, as tornado warnings and 70-mph gusts battered the village.

The call came in at 1:05 p.m. Monday, July 27, at Washington Street and Curtiss Street, near Village Hall and the Downers Grove Police Department at 850 Curtiss St., according to ChicagoFireMap, a real-time Chicagoland dispatch tracking service. The incident was classified as a TRT Below Grade Rescue.

Downers Grove Fire Department and crews from multiple neighboring departments had been working the scene for more than two hours as of the last dispatch update, according to Kane & DuPage County Scanner, a scanner monitoring account covering DuPage County. A technical rescue box alarm brought additional resources to the site. Fire crews were attempting to reach the trapped workers through two separate access points into the sewer system. Two rescuers were evaluated for minor injuries during the operation.

The call came 20 minutes after a tornado warning expired for Downers Grove, Woodridge, and Westmont at 12:45 p.m., according to the National Weather Service. The storms knocked out power to more than 200,000 ComEd customers across the Chicago region by 1:40 p.m. and produced wind gusts up to 70 mph. Midway International Airport recorded a 70-mph gust just after noon.

No official statement from the Downers Grove Fire Department or the Village of Downers Grove had been released as of Monday afternoon. The identities of the trapped workers, the cause of the entrapment, and the outcome of the rescue have not been confirmed.
