Downers Grove Township's two main facilities lost power during Tuesday's storms and remain closed as of Wednesday, Aug. 12, with no firm reopening time announced.
Both buildings are dark.
The Township Office at 4340 Prince St. and the Township Center at 4341 Saratoga Ave. are without electricity, according to a notice posted on the township's website by Katie Bartlett. All scheduled events at both locations have been canceled, and the township said notifications were sent to those affected.
Residents who need to report downed trees or flooding on township roads should call the highway department at (630) 719-6625 and leave a detailed voicemail with the address of concern and a callback number.
The closure adds to disruptions across the Downers Grove area after severe thunderstorms moved through Tuesday morning, prompting a tornado warning for DuPage County. Winds exceeded 90 mph in parts of the suburbs, according to the Daily Herald, and more than 2,000 ComEd customers in the Downers Grove area were without power as of 5 p.m. Aug. 11, Patch reported. Across five counties, roughly 230,000 ComEd customers lost service.
The Aug. 11 storms marked the second significant weather event to hit the area in about two weeks. Late-July storms knocked out power to thousands and left infrastructure damage across the village, as we reported July 28.
The Village of Downers Grove is also fielding storm-damage reports, according to a storm response update. Residents can report parkway tree damage and fallen limbs to Public Works at (630) 434-5460 or through the online service request portal. The village advises bundling tree branches (maximum 2-foot diameter, 4-foot length, 50 pounds) for Republic Services pickup at no extra cost; no stickers are required. Large trunk segments and loose piles will not be collected. A list of licensed tree removal companies is available at downers.us.
All previously scheduled township events remain canceled until power is restored. Residents should check dgtownship.com for rescheduled dates and reopening updates.
