Severe storms pounded Downers Grove on Monday, July 27, leaving localized flooding, downed tree limbs, and scattered debris across the village.

Village crews responded throughout the community Monday afternoon and evening, the Village of Downers Grove said in a post on X at 8:52 p.m. The storms were part of a broader system that tore across the Chicago region with tornado warnings issued for DuPage, Cook, and Will counties.

National Weather Service meteorologist Eric Lenning told Block Club Chicago that winds reached 74 mph at Midway Airport, with as much as three inches of rain falling there during the storm. More than 200,000 homes across ComEd's service area lost power as of 1:40 p.m. Monday, according to the Chicago Tribune. A Downers Grove-specific outage count was not available.

What residents should do

The village directed residents to take three steps depending on the type of damage:

Parkway tree damage: Report it through the Village's CityView Portal at cvportal.downers.us. The portal's help line is 630-434-5515, available weekdays from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Power outages: Contact ComEd at 1-800-EDISON-1 (1-800-334-7661). Residents can also sign up for outage alerts by texting "ADD OUTAGE" to 266-33 or updating preferences at ComEd.com.

Downed power lines: Call 911 immediately. Do not approach downed lines.

Storm sewer rescue on Curtiss Street

The same storm system triggered a separate emergency in the 800 block of Curtiss Street. At approximately 12:50 p.m. Monday, two contractor workers became trapped in a storm sewer, according to a Downers Grove Fire Department press release. Firefighters launched a technical rescue with assistance from multiple west suburban departments.

By 8:28 p.m., one worker had been pulled from the sewer approximately 200 feet from the original entry point and transported to Good Samaritan Hospital in good condition.

One worker remained missing as of that update, and the Fire Department transitioned from rescue to recovery operations.

The village has not announced a timeline for parkway tree removal or debris cleanup. NWS meteorologist Kevin Doom said a cold front moved through Monday evening, with dry conditions expected through Friday, July 31. Residents can check the CityView Portal for updates on service requests.
