The first 35 kids to participate in a fishing derby at Lake Harriet in Woodridge on Saturday, Aug. 8, will take home a free fishing rod and reel, courtesy of state Sen. John Curran and state Rep. Nicole La Ha.
The two legislators are hosting their annual derby for children 12 and under at the lake, located at 7000 Woodridge Drive, from 9 to 11 a.m. The event is free and co-hosted with the Woodridge Park District. No pre-registration is listed on the Woodridge Park District's event page.
Prizes will be awarded for biggest fish, most fish caught, and the Sportsman Award, according to WJOL.
Three organizations will staff educational booths: the Chicago Herpetological Society, DuPage County Forest Preserve Police, and the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. Young anglers can learn about local wildlife, water safety, and conservation between casts.
No fishing experience is necessary.
"Cast a line, connect with friends, and experience the beauty of nature," Curran, the Illinois Senate Minority Leader who represents the 41st District, said in a statement promoting the event on Monday, July 27.
La Ha, who represents the 82nd House District covering portions of DuPage, Cook, and Will counties, said the derby gives kids and families a chance to enjoy fishing together and make memories outdoors.
The derby has been held in previous years at Tampier Lake West, according to Sen. Curran's website. This year's move to Lake Harriet puts it squarely in Woodridge.
