The DuPage County Transportation Committee approved a $268,216 contract Tuesday, July 7, to study potential improvements to 63rd Street between Belmont Road and Williams Street near Woodridge.

The contract, awarded to Christopher B. Burke Engineering, covers Phase I engineering services. That means the firm will identify what road improvements are needed, assess environmental impacts, and determine right-of-way requirements before any design or construction begins. Design and construction would follow in later years if the project advances.

The segment runs along County Highway 38, a county-maintained road stretching from Madison Street to I-355. The firm was selected through a qualification-based process under the Local Government Professional Services Selection Act, meaning the county chose on credentials rather than lowest bid.

The 63rd Street study is part of the county's broader 2026 road program. In a May statement announcing that program, Transportation Committee Chair Mary FitzGerald Ozog said, "We want to make it easier for people to get around in DuPage County, whether it's by car, via public transit, bicycle or on foot. This year's transportation program aims to improve safety and accessibility, addressing important areas of need."

Trail agreement moves forward

The committee also approved a $50,000 reimbursement agreement with Union Pacific Railroad for the East Branch DuPage River Trail project. The agreement covers a section where the trail crosses or runs adjacent to Union Pacific rail lines, a step required before construction can proceed on that segment.

The East Branch DuPage River Trail is part of the county's 2025–29 Transportation Improvement Program, which dedicates more than $20 million to pedestrian and bicycle path projects over four fiscal years.

Other approvals

The committee approved several additional items at the July 7 meeting, according to the posted agenda:

  • A $100,000 increase to an existing HR Green, Inc. contract for preliminary design engineering services, bringing the amended total to $500,000. The contract completion date was also extended.
  • Two legal services contracts with Thompson Coburn LLP, each capped at $30,000, running through November 30, 2027. One covers environmental legal work; the other handles Highway Authority Benefit Agreement applications, with the county to be fully reimbursed for the second contract.
  • A $37,734 contract with RTA Fleet Success for fleet management software, effective August 1, 2026, through July 31, 2027.
  • A $43,620 award to Ferguson Enterprises LLC for Milton Township storm sewer materials, funded entirely by the township.

The county's 2025–29 transportation program proposes more than $402 million in federal and county funds, including roughly $50 million for pavement improvements and $32 million for bridge repair.

No next Transportation Committee meeting date has been confirmed. The committee's prior meeting was held Tuesday, June 16. Agendas and materials are available on the DuPage County Legistar portal.
