The Community Adult Day Center, a Downers Grove nonprofit that has provided daytime dementia care since 1986, is celebrating its 40th anniversary with a fundraising gala on Friday, November 6, 2026.

The "Forty and Flourishing" event will feature a cocktail reception, dinner, live music, a wine pull, paddle raise (a live donation appeal), and a live auction of three original artworks created by CADC members. A "Forty Faces" exhibit will showcase community members connected to the center over the past four decades.

CADC operates on the garden level of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church at 4501 Main St. Founded by representatives of 11 area churches, the center serves adults 50 and older who can no longer safely stay home alone during the day. During 2025, the nonprofit logged 95,020 hours of therapeutic activities and respite services and served 4,750 hot meals, according to the center.

Executive Director Susan Sinderson describes the programming philosophy as rooted in "hygge," the Danish concept of connection, comfort, and contentment. Members rotate through five rooms during the day: a horticulture space called the Bloom Room, a "Magic Forest" room with virtual-reality cognitive exercises, a Cozy Chair room for conversation and drumming, a Move and Groove room for chair tai chi and yoga, and a café for meals and art projects.

"CADC is a very special place where families who are facing very difficult challenges can find hope, connection, and care," Sinderson told Downers Grove Magazine in its July/August 2026 issue.

As of a 2022 ABC7 Chicago report, the center was one of only a few adult day programs in Chicago's western suburbs. It is open Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Fees are covered through self-pay, private insurance, or at no cost for those eligible for the Community Care Program or registered with the VA.

Details on tickets and registration for the November 6 gala are expected at communityadultdaycenter.org. Residents can also call (630) 968-1060 to arrange a tour or ask about volunteering.
