Downers Grove middle schoolers face a packed calendar of events that call for dressy clothes, and a new PTA program wants to make sure cost isn't a barrier.

The PTAs at Herrick and O'Neill Middle Schools are collecting gently used occasion wear and giving it away at the district's first Style Closet, announced by District 58 on Nov. 2.

The need is specific. Herrick's Fortnightly program, a series of dance and etiquette classes for eighth graders, requires students to wear skirts, dresses, dress slacks or collared shirts and ties, according to the Herrick PTA. No jeans, t-shirts or athletic clothing is allowed. Eighth-grade promotion, Confirmation and holiday gatherings add more occasions when families may need outfits their kids will outgrow quickly.

The Style Closet aims to give those outfits a second life. The PTA is accepting clean, gently used occasion wear in sizes 10/12 and up at any District 58 school through Friday, Dec. 4.

The shopping event is Saturday, Dec. 12, from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. in the Herrick Middle School cafeteria. All District 58 families are welcome.

The district's announcement describes the initiative as a way to "make special occasions more accessible for our District 58 families." A full list of accepted clothing items is available on the event flyer through the district or PTA.

Fortnightly dates for the 2026–27 school year have not yet been announced, according to the Herrick PTA website.
