Cinemark Seven Bridges in Woodridge is the only Illinois theater on a newly published global list of 41 cinemas equipped to show Christopher Nolan's "The Odyssey" in IMAX 1570, widely considered the highest-resolution theatrical film format in existence. The film opens Friday, July 17.
The Woodridge theater, at 6500 Route 53, appeared on the list published by CNBC TV18 on Monday, July 14. Of the 41 IMAX 1570 screens worldwide, 34 are in North America and just seven are outside the continent.
That scarcity could drive traffic to the Seven Bridges entertainment district. IMAX CEO Richard Gelfond told Variety that some IMAX 1570 locations are already sold out into the fifth week of the film's run, including 2 a.m. and 7 a.m. screenings.
"We're sold out in some theaters into the fifth week already, and the 2am shows, the 7am shows, so there's certainly more demand," Gelfond said. "The problem is they haven't made new Imax film projectors in about 50 years. So we retrofit them, we rebuild them."
The number of cinemas capable of projecting the format grew from 30 to 41 since the release of "Oppenheimer" three years ago, driven largely by Nolan's advocacy for large-format film.
"The Odyssey" is the first feature ever shot entirely on IMAX 1570 cameras. Each camera weighs approximately 397 pounds and required fresh film stock every three minutes during production. The finished reel runs more than 17 kilometers and weighs about 529 pounds. On screen, the IMAX 1570 version fills a nearly square 1.43:1 aspect ratio rather than the standard widescreen shape.
The film is rated R. Its cast includes Matt Damon as Odysseus, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Charlize Theron, and Lupita Nyong'o, among others.
Cinemark Seven Bridges has operated at the Main Street at Seven Bridges mixed-use district since 2000. The complex also houses Seven Bridges Ice Arena, Buffalo Wild Wings, and Aurelio's Pizza.
