The joint Woodridge-Downers Grove fireworks show, rained out on the Fourth of July, will light up the sky Saturday, October 3 at 7:30 p.m. along 75th Street and Lemont Road.
The Village of Woodridge confirmed the new date in its July 24 e-newsletter, ending three weeks of uncertainty after severe weather forced the cancellation. The Village of Downers Grove had announced the night of Saturday, July 4 that the show was scrapped "due to unsafe conditions at the launch site."
The village's newsletter said the rescheduled display will feature an expanded grand finale marking America's 250th birthday. Viewers can set up chairs and blankets in the parking lots along 75th Street and Lemont Road in Woodridge.
This is the second time in four years the joint show has been pushed to October. In 2022, the fireworks were canceled on July 4 and rescheduled to Friday, October 2 at the same location.
Mayor addresses storm damage
Mayor Gina Cunningham also used the July 24 e-newsletter to address damage from the July 4 storm. In a written message to residents, Cunningham said the village learned that some neighbors experienced street flooding, basement flooding, and sanitary sewer backups.
"Neighbors should never hesitate to request help when safety is a concern," Cunningham wrote, urging anyone experiencing significant flooding to call 911. "Prompt reporting allows emergency personnel to respond as quickly as possible and assess the situation."
Cunningham directed residents who experienced sewer backups to the village's cost-share incentive programs, which help fund home plumbing improvements to reduce the risk of future backups. Program details are available at woodridgeil.gov.
The village said it is reviewing the storm's impacts and gathering information from affected residents. Cunningham also encouraged residents to sign up for emergency alert systems including CodeRED, the Red Cross Severe Weather App, and the FEMA App.
