Woodridge School District 68 students will learn from home on Election Day instead of getting the day off.

The district announced in a calendar update posted Monday, Aug. 31, that Tuesday, Nov. 3 will be a district-wide e-learning day. The original 2026-27 calendar had listed that date as no school.

The Illinois General Assembly did not declare Election Day a state holiday for 2026, according to the district's notice. In previous years, state lawmakers made that declaration, giving districts a clear reason to close buildings. Without the holiday designation, Woodridge 68 had to find another path.

At least one district school will serve as a polling place for the Nov. 3 General Election. The district said it has no control over whether a school is selected as a polling site and cannot refuse the designation. Rather than hold in-person classes alongside voters, the district chose to keep students out of the buildings entirely.

Woodridge 68 operates seven schools serving roughly 2,927 students in pre-kindergarten through eighth grade: Thomas Jefferson Junior High, William F. Murphy Elementary, Edgewood Elementary, John L. Sipley Elementary, Willow Creek Elementary, Meadowview Elementary and Goodrich Elementary. The district's notice did not specify which building or buildings will be used for polling.

On Nov. 3, students will complete assignments remotely from home. Monday, Nov. 2 remains a School Improvement Day with no school on the original calendar, meaning D68 families face back-to-back days without in-person classes the week of Nov. 2.

The switch also shifts the end of the school year. The last day of school moves from Thursday, May 27, 2027, to Wednesday, May 26, 2027. The district described the earlier finish as an added benefit of converting Election Day to an instructional day. Wednesday, May 27 becomes a reserve emergency day, used only if weather or other closures require makeup time.

Updated dates have been posted on the district's web calendar and its printable at-a-glance calendar. The district said reminders will go out as Nov. 3 and the end-of-year dates approach.
