Woodridge gym members will need to find another workout spot for three days next month. The Athletic Recreation Center at 8201 S. Janes Ave. will shut its doors Wednesday, August 12 through Friday, August 14 so staff and outside contractors can tackle a long list of facility improvements.
The Woodridge Park District announced the closure on Tuesday, July 22, saying the dates were chosen because mid-August typically sees some of the lightest weekday traffic at the facility. Scheduling the work during regular business hours also lets the district avoid paying contractors overtime rates.
What's getting done
The project list covers more than a dozen tasks: carpet installation and cleaning, track netting repairs, turf divider curtain installation, drywall repairs, paint touch-ups, high dusting, deep cleaning of showers and fitness equipment, window cleaning, track cleaning, and storage reorganization.
The ARC houses a multi-court gymnasium, a 40-by-60-yard indoor turf field, an indoor walking and jogging track, group fitness rooms, and multi-purpose rooms. Normal hours run Monday through Thursday from 5 a.m. to 8 p.m., Friday from 5 a.m. to 7 p.m., and weekends from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.
What members should know
The district will not issue refunds for the three-day closure. For context, resident fitness memberships run $30 per month or $300 per year, according to the ARC's website. Group exercise classes will move to the Fred C. Hohnke Community Center at 2600 Center Drive in Woodridge during that stretch. A full schedule of relocated classes has not yet been posted; the district said details and links would be available soon on woodridgeparks.org.
The Park District's announcement does not specify a reopening time. The ARC's regular Saturday hours are 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The district also encouraged members to take advantage of Woodridge's outdoor parks, paved bikeways, and regional trail connections while the building is closed. Members with questions can call the ARC's customer service line at (630) 353-3400.
Fall registration ahead
The closure falls just after another key date for ARC users. Resident registration for Woodridge Park District fall programs opens Wednesday, July 29 at 9 a.m., with nonresident registration following Wednesday, August 5. Sign-ups can be completed online or in person at the ARC or Fred C. Hohnke Community Center.
