Westmont residents can securely destroy sensitive documents and support Special Olympics Illinois at a drive-up shred event Saturday, Oct. 3, at the Westmont Police-Fire Facility, 500 N. Cass Ave.

The Westmont Police Department is partnering with Cutting Edge Document Destruction Inc. for the fundraiser, which runs from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The department is asking for a $10 donation per box or container of paper, according to the village's civic alert.

Participants drive up, drop off their documents and leave. The paper is collected on-site, then shredded offsite by Cutting Edge Document Destruction with Westmont police personnel observing the process. The company is HIPAA-compliant and AAA-certified through the National Association for Information Destruction.

One prep step. Remove all plastic and metal items, including staples and paper clips, before bringing paper to the event.

The department framed the event as an identity-theft prevention measure, noting it gives residents a chance to safeguard personal information. Special Olympics merchandise will also be available for purchase. Debit, credit, check and cash are accepted for donations and purchases.

The department held two shred events in 2025 with the same format, same location and same $10 donation, according to Shaw Local. The fundraiser ties into the statewide Law Enforcement Torch Run, which celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2026 and has raised more than $70 million for Special Olympics Illinois over its history, according to Special Olympics Illinois. The Torch Run presented Special Olympics Illinois a $5.9 million check at the 2026 Summer Games Opening Ceremony, representing the total raised statewide in 2025.
