A man threatened to shoot a gas station employee and made off with roughly $600 in cash and cigarettes from the Mobil station at 2181 63rd St. in Downers Grove on the evening of July 27, the Downers Grove Police Department said.

The employee was sitting outside around 9:20 p.m. to warn customers that a power outage had knocked the gas pumps offline when the suspect approached and said, "I have a gun. Give me the money or I'll shoot you," according to Downers Grove Police, as reported by Patch. The suspect implied he was holding a weapon at his right side but did not display a firearm, police said.

The employee went inside the store with the man, who told him to hurry up while removing approximately $600 from the cash register. The suspect also demanded cigarettes before fleeing the scene.

No one was injured.

Police were called to the station around 10:30 p.m., roughly 70 minutes after the robbery occurred.

Suspect description

The Downers Grove Police Department described the suspect as a Black man in his early 20s, approximately 6 feet tall with a medium build. He had medium-length blond dreadlocks and was last seen wearing a black medical mask, a hooded sweatshirt and black pants.

No arrest has been announced. Police are asking the public for help identifying the suspect.

The same address was the site of a separate armed robbery on April 17, 2022, according to a Downers Grove Police Department press release. In that incident, a suspect entered the store, displayed a handgun and fled on foot with proceeds from the register. No one was injured in that case either. Police have not indicated whether the two incidents are connected.
