Drivers who use I-88 to get in and out of Downers Grove should plan for overnight ramp closures through November.

The Illinois Tollway is shutting down ramps at three DuPage County interchanges to install new tolling equipment and complete electrical work at toll plazas, Shaw Local reported Oct. 31, citing a Tollway news release. The affected locations include the Downers Grove interchange, the Naperville Road interchange and the Winfield Road interchange in Warrenville.

The closures are part of the Tollway's broader capital improvement program. Work at the affected locations is scheduled to continue into 2027, Shaw Local reported.

What Downers Grove drivers need to know

In late November, the ramp connecting Downers Drive to westbound I-88 will close overnight to install new tolling equipment. The closure will start at midnight and reopen by 5 a.m. the following morning. A detour will redirect traffic along Route 56 to reach I-88.

Additional long-term ramp closures at Downers Drive are expected beyond November, according to the Tollway release cited by Shaw Local.

The closures are being coordinated with the village of Downers Grove, the Illinois Department of Transportation, DuPage County, the cities of Naperville and Warrenville, and local fire and police departments, according to the release.

Other I-88 closures in November

For up to two nights in early November, crews will do toll plaza electrical work on the ramp from eastbound I-88 to Naperville Road. Those nights will bring intermittent 15-minute full ramp closures between midnight and 4 a.m.

Also in early November, the ramp from Naperville Road to westbound I-88 will close between midnight and 5 a.m. for up to two nights. No detour will be posted for that closure.

A separate closure of the eastbound I-88 ramp to Winfield Road is also scheduled. That ramp will close at midnight for new tolling equipment installation, with a detour routing drivers to exit at Route 59 and continue along Gerry Road to reach Winfield Road. The ramp is scheduled to reopen by 5 a.m.

Safety reminders

Electronic message signs and construction signs will alert drivers to detours and closures. Construction zone speed limits are in effect at all times, even when workers are not present. All scheduling depends on weather.

Drivers can check the Daily Construction Alert on the Illinois Tollway's website for updated closure information.
