Drivers who use I-355 near Woodridge and Downers Grove should expect overnight ramp and interchange closures through the fall as the Illinois Tollway repairs pavement and bridges along the corridor.

The work stretches between I-80 and Army Trail Road across Will, Cook and DuPage counties, Shaw Local first reported Oct. 31. The Tollway said in a news release that closures allow crews a safe work zone and give new concrete time to cure.

Ramp closures without detours will run between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. at multiple I-355 interchanges, including Ogden Avenue, Boughton Road, 75th Street, 63rd Street, Maple Avenue, Butterfield Road, Roosevelt Road, North Avenue and Army Trail Road.

A separate set of ramp closures with posted detours will run between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. Those affect ramps connecting I-355 to I-55 and I-88 in both directions, according to the Tollway's news release.

One detour will route traffic from I-355 onto westbound I-88 through the Route 53 interchange and back onto eastbound I-88.

The ramp connecting Ogden Avenue to eastbound I-88 is also scheduled to close without a detour as part of the pavement work.

Broader project scope

The repairs are part of the Tollway's seven-year, $2 billion "Bridging the Future" capital plan, according to the Tollway's project page. Beyond pavement and bridge work, crews are installing CCTV cameras, replacing signs, repairing lighting and improving drainage.

The Tollway's project page states the work is scheduled to be complete by the end of the year. Shaw Local reported that repair work is scheduled to continue into 2027, citing the Tollway. The sources do not clarify whether those timelines refer to different phases of the project.

Construction is being coordinated with the Illinois Department of Transportation, DuPage County, the Village of Woodridge, the Village of Lemont, DuPage Township, the Canadian National Railway, the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway and local police and fire departments, according to the Tollway.

All scheduling depends on weather. Construction zone speed limits remain in effect around the clock, even when workers are not present.

I-88 closures also ahead for Downers Grove

Separately, overnight ramp closures on I-88 are scheduled through November to complete toll plaza improvements, Shaw Local reported. The Downers Grove Interchange will be affected.

In late November, a full closure of the ramp connecting Downers Drive to westbound I-88 is planned to install new tolling equipment. That closure will run from midnight to 5 a.m., with a detour along Route 56 to I-88. Additional long-term ramp closures at Downers Drive are expected, with work continuing into 2027.

Electronic message signs and construction signage will alert drivers to detours and closures on both highways. Drivers can check the Tollway's Daily Construction Alert page at illinoistollway.com for nightly updates.
