DuPage County residents have two ways to mark the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks this month.

The DuPage County Sheriff's Office opened a Memorial Wall at its Wheaton headquarters, and the Village of Westmont will hold a Patriot Day ceremony on Friday, Sept. 11. Both observances are open to the public.

Memorial Wall on display through September

The sheriff's office Memorial Wall is on display throughout September in the lobby at 501 N. County Farm Rd. in Wheaton, Patch reported. The wall honors those who died in the Sept. 11 attacks and the subsequent war, along with military personnel, police officers and firefighters.

Sheriff James Mendrick said in a statement reported by Patch on Sept. 1 that the display recognizes first responders and Armed Forces members who protect the public. "This is a day of remembrance to honor those whom made the ultimate sacrifice," Mendrick said.

The sheriff's office serves all of DuPage County, including Downers Grove, Woodridge and Westmont. Residents can visit the lobby during business hours or call (630) 682-7256 for more information.

Westmont Patriot Day ceremony

The Village of Westmont will hold a separate Patriot Day Ceremony at 10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 11, at the Fire/Police Facility, 500 N. Cass Ave. The ceremony remembers those who lost their lives on Sept. 11, 2001, and is open to the entire community, according to the village.

Sept. 11, 2026, marks 25 years since hijacked planes struck the World Trade Center in New York, the Pentagon in Virginia and a field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania, killing nearly 3,000 people.

The Memorial Wall will remain on display through the end of September.
