Three downtown Downers Grove railroad crossings will shut down overnight this weekend for BNSF Railway maintenance, the Village announced Wednesday, Sept. 16.

The closures affect Maple Avenue, Washington Street and Forest Avenue. Each crossing will close at 7 p.m. and reopen at 9 a.m. the following morning on three consecutive nights: Friday, Sept. 18 through Monday morning, Sept. 21.

Drivers who need to cross the BNSF tracks during those hours should use the Belmont Road underpass, according to the announcement.

BNSF's work zone safety contractor notified the Village earlier in the week of the project, which covers rail infrastructure from Hinsdale to Naperville. The Village said in its announcement that BNSF did not provide enough advance notice for effective coordination and communication with residents.

The maintenance project is the latest in a series of BNSF-related disruptions at downtown crossings. The Village's official social media account reported a gate malfunction at the Forest Avenue crossing in May, when BNSF crews responded to repair the equipment.

All three crossings are expected to reopen by 9 a.m. Monday, Sept. 21. Residents can check the Village of Downers Grove website at downers.us for updates during the closure period.
