Women who went back to college after a long break can apply for scholarships worth up to $3,000 in the Downers Grove area.
The Downers Grove Area Branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) opened applications for its annual Back-to-the-Books Scholarship for the 2026–2027 academic year, according to the branch's website. The program targets women who took at least a three-year break from their college education and are now close to finishing a degree.
Applicants must live in the postal districts of Downers Grove, Westmont, Darien, Woodridge or Lisle. They must be within two years of completing an undergraduate or graduate degree at an accredited college or university. The three-year gap can fall anywhere in an applicant's college history, not just immediately before the current enrollment.
Award amounts depend on enrollment status and degree type:
- Full-time students within two years of a bachelor's or graduate degree: up to $3,000
- Half-time students within one year of a bachelor's or graduate degree: up to $1,500
- Full-time students within one year of an associate degree: up to $1,500
- Half-time students within one year of an associate degree: up to $750
The AAUW branch also weighs professional goals, financial need, academic achievement, volunteer work and employment history. The scholarship can be combined with other financial aid.
The branch ran the same scholarship cycle in September 2025. According to a listing on the branch's website, the program has helped 73 women finish their education, awarding more than $120,250 over its history.
Applicants must first request an application form, then complete and return it. All materials must arrive by Oct. 15. The branch plans to select recipients in November, with funds available for the following semester or quarter.
To request an application, call 630-440-0098 or write to Downers Grove Area Branch, AAUW, PO Box 694, Downers Grove, IL 60515.
