Downers Grove Grade School District 58 families face decisions on insurance costs and school cellphone rules when the Board of Education votes Wednesday, Oct. 14.
The meeting begins at 7 p.m. at the Downers Grove Civic Center, 850 Curtiss St. It falls on a Wednesday instead of the board's usual second Monday because of Columbus Day.
According to the district's board preview, action items include approval of medical and dental insurance rates, an employer health savings account (HSA) contribution, a package of policy updates and the designation of surplus equipment. No dollar figures for the insurance rates or HSA contribution have been published.
The policy package, known as PRESS Issue 122, had its first reading at the board's Sept. 14 meeting. It includes updates to citations, legal references and new language across several district policies.
A district newsletter outlined the topics the Policy Committee reviewed as part of Issue 122: public hearing time limits, intradistrict transfer language, family opt-out provisions, the new Illinois bell-to-bell cellphone law and the mental health screening opt-out process. The district said its current cellphone policy already meets the new state requirements.
The board, led by President Darren Hughes, will also hear committee reports from its Legislative Committee, Financial Advisory Committee and Health & Wellness Committee. A SASED update is on the agenda.
Other action items include approval of the Sept. 14 meeting minutes and 2026 Illinois Association of School Boards (IASB) resolutions. The specific resolutions District 58 will support have not been detailed publicly.
Residents can speak during the public comment period at the meeting or email the board at [email protected]. The full agenda is available at dg58.us/BOE_Agendas.
The board's next session is a fall Curriculum Workshop on Monday, Oct. 26, at 7 p.m. at the Civic Center. District 58 parent-teacher conferences follow on Tuesday, Oct. 20, and Thursday, Oct. 22.
