Downers Grove North defeated crosstown rival Downers Grove South 45-7 on Friday, Aug. 28, extending the Trojans' winning streak in the series to 12 games.

Senior Kevin Jay powered the victory with 121 rushing yards and two touchdowns. The 5-foot-10, 190-pound senior started the season opener at quarterback just one week earlier, throwing a touchdown pass to Joey Serpico in a 17-12 win over Morgan Park on Aug. 21. Against South, head coach Joe Horeni moved Jay primarily to running back.

The position switch paid off. Jay ran for 121 yards and two scores against the Mustangs at Downers Grove North High School, Shaw Local's Scott Schmid reported. Jay accounted for 1,029 total yards and 17 touchdowns last season as a backup behind three-year starter Owen Lansu, who left for the University of Minnesota.

Zachary Surowiec also scored on a breakaway touchdown run during the 45-7 win.

North's defense smothered the Mustangs. South managed just four first downs for the entire game, according to Patch. The Mustangs had entered the matchup at 1-0 after a 49-27 win over West Aurora in Week 1, when quarterback James Sobkowiak threw touchdown passes of 27 yards to Tony Evans and 52 yards to Nate Thurston. None of that carried over to Friday's 7:30 p.m. kickoff.

The lopsided result continued a familiar pattern. The last four crosstown meetings have been one-sided, including a 55-13 DGN victory last season.

The DGN Football program celebrated the 12th consecutive rivalry win on X after the game.

DGN, ranked No. 4 in the Illinois Media Class 7A poll and No. 4 in the Daily Herald's Top 20 entering the week, improved to 2-0.
