Jackhammers and construction fencing have arrived at the heart of downtown Downers Grove, where crews are tearing up pavement near the Metra station as part of a $3.6 million makeover of Linda Kunze Plaza and five surrounding gathering spaces along Main Street.

The Village of Downers Grove confirmed Monday, July 20, that construction is actively underway, posting video of the demolition work on X. The project will add outdoor dining areas, shade structures with lights and solar panels, landscaping, and improved pedestrian connections to the busy stretch used by commuters, shoppers, and diners.

Pavement removal began the week of July 6 at three east-side Main Street locations: southeast Burlington, northeast Curtiss, and northeast Maple, according to the Village's project page. By Friday, July 17, underground utility work had started at Main and Maple, and a sidewalk path pour was scheduled for Monday, July 20. Removals at the northeast corner of Main and Curtiss were scheduled to begin Tuesday, July 21, with utility work following. Seat wall construction at Main and Maple continued through the week of July 20.

The work is part of the Downtown Business District Flexible Amenity Areas project, designated ST-067 on the Village's project tracker. The Village Council approved the $3.6 million contract with Landmark Contractors, Inc. by a 5-2 vote on Tuesday, April 14. The project covers five locations identified in the 2025 Guiding DG Streetscapes Plan as spaces for outdoor dining, casual seating, community gathering, and public art.

The price tag drew debate. The Village originally budgeted about $1.8 million for the five sites. Commissioner Martin Tully, who voted no, said at the April 14 meeting that the final cost was double what was originally contemplated. "What's now on the table is double that. And that would be OK if I thought the extra amount was necessary and was commensurate with the cost involved," Tully said. "I'm not convinced that's the case." Commissioner Tammy Sarver also voted against the contract.

Supporters framed the spending as an investment in downtown's economic engine. Commissioner Chris Gilmartin said at the same meeting that the amenity areas generate sales tax, food and beverage tax, and property tax revenue that funds other Village services.

Stephanie Graves, the Village's engineering manager, is overseeing the project. All schedules are weather-dependent.
