A cluster of intersections in northwest Downers Grove that carries roughly 50,000 to 55,000 vehicles a day recorded 132 crashes over five years, and DuPage County is moving toward a full redesign of the corridor.

The DuPage County Division of Transportation (DuDOT) is evaluating improvements at the Ogden Avenue and Belmont Road/Finley Road intersection, along with nearby segments of Warrenville Road and Cross Street. Crash data from DuDOT covering 2019 through 2023 shows 40 percent of the 132 collisions were rear-end crashes, 21 percent involved left turns, and 19 percent were right-angle crashes.

A separate intersection at Cross Street, Warrenville Road, and Ogden Avenue logged 29 additional crashes during the same period.

DuDOT held a public information meeting on June 11 at the Cathy Mahoney Recreation Center to present design alternatives and discuss potential land acquisition. A community survey is open for residents who want to weigh in before engineering plans are finalized.

What's on the table

County documents show DuDOT is weighing several options: dual left-turn lanes at Belmont and Ogden, a shared-use path for pedestrians and cyclists, updated traffic signals and signage, and full roadway resurfacing. The project's online survey asks residents to choose between two design alternatives for the main intersection and whether they support a 10-foot-wide paved bike path along the corridor.

The survey also asks whether residents have concerns about potential impacts to nearby businesses or parking.

Timeline

DuPage County is completing Phase I engineering in 2026, which covers an assessment of existing conditions and evaluation of solutions. Phase II design work is scheduled to begin in 2027 and run through 2028. Construction is targeted for 2029 or 2030, according to the county's project page.

How to weigh in

The community survey is available at dupagecounty-ktgfp.formstack.com/forms/dpc_dot_public_survey. No closing date has been publicly announced.

The Village of Downers Grove shared the survey on its official Facebook page on June 13, tagging the DuPage County Board and Chamber630. The post drew 44 likes and 23 comments.

Dawn Feltz commented on the post: "Hopefully whatever is implemented will be an actual improvement. Turning W on Ogden from NB Belmont is a joke, especially during rush hour."
