The Downers Grove Village Council takes up an ordinance Tuesday, Oct. 20, that would add stop signs, crosswalks and curb extensions across a large south-side neighborhood.
The changes would cover the area bounded by Fairview Avenue and Main Street east to west and 63rd Street to 75th Street north to south. They follow a neighborhood traffic study conducted in May that evaluated traffic volumes, vehicle speeds and pedestrian and bicycle counts during peak hours, Patch reported.
The Downers Grove Transportation and Parking Commission unanimously recommended the package in September.
The plan includes:
Stop sign upgrades. Yield signs would be replaced with stop signs at eight intersections, including Fairmount and Meadow Crest, several points along Claremont Drive and 72nd Street and Lyman. Two-way stop signs would be added at six more intersections, including Fairmount Avenue and Ridgeview Street, 67th Street and Briargate Drive and 66th Street and Osage Avenue.
Crosswalks. High-visibility "piano key-style" crosswalks would go in at 13 locations, among them 75th and Main, 75th and Canterbury, Fairview and 66th and Fairmount and Parkview.
Other measures. One-way stops would be added at 64 T-intersections across the neighborhood. Curb extensions would be installed on parts of Fairmount Avenue.
The village's Neighborhood Traffic Study Program has completed 11 studies since 2011, according to the Public Works Traffic Division page.
The ordinance is listed as ORD 2026-11423 on the village's meeting agenda. The session is a first reading, meaning a final vote would come at a later meeting. The council meets at 7 p.m. at Village Hall, 850 Curtiss St.
Residents can submit public comment through the village's electronic rEmarks form, which closes at noon on the day of the meeting.
