Downers Grove South's boys soccer season is over after a 2-1 loss to top-seeded Oswego East in the IHSA Class 3A regional semifinal.
The 15th-seeded Mustangs drew a tough opening-round matchup against the bracket's No. 1 seed and couldn't overcome a two-goal performance from Oswego East's Jake McPhee, who carried the Wolves into the regional final, WSPY News reported. Parker Morrison and Gabe Lopez each recorded an assist for Oswego East.
DGS found the net once but could not pull even.
DGS Athletics wrote on X that the team's postseason run was finished, while praising the heart and hustle the roster showed throughout the year. The account also thanked the departing senior class for their role in the program.
"A huge THANK YOU to our seniors for your incredible leadership and dedication to DGS Soccer!" the post read.
The seeding gap told the story of the challenge DGS faced. As the 15th seed, the Mustangs were matched against an Oswego East squad that entered the bracket as the top-ranked team in the Class 3A field. McPhee's two goals proved to be the difference.
Crosstown rival Downers Grove North also saw its season end the same day. Fourth-seeded East Aurora shut out the 13th-seeded Trojans 3-0 at East Aurora High School, according to WSPY News. The two eliminations mean no Downers Grove team remains in the Class 3A bracket.
Despite the Mustangs' exit, their home field stays in the spotlight. Oswego East advances to face ninth-seeded Waubonsie Valley in the regional final Saturday, Oct. 24, at Downers Grove South, with kickoff at 10 a.m.
